Painting an entire car may cost more money than you are willing to spend.  However, you’ve recently had to replace a door or bumper due to an accident. Our Vancouver auto paint shop can perfectly match the existing colour of your vehicle.  Every vehicle has a paint code on the door in the trunk.  This paint code gives us a very specific formula and this formula tells our technicians how much of each primary colour and toners to mix. We can then test that colour to your existing colour and adjust accordingly.  Having matched the colour our technicians can then buff and fade the new paint in order to match the fading of the original colour due to time.  This process of colour matching is great for fixing smaller cosmetic issues. The environment can do a number on the look of your vehicle. Salt in the winter can cause rust along the wheel-well as well as leave small dents from the rocks your tires kick up.  The sun can also cause the paint of your car to crack and fade over time.

Car Painting Procedure

Often the process of painting a car can be mystifying, but at Super Euro, we are the car painting experts — so we thought we should share a brief overview of what goes into the painting of a car.

Painting your own vehicle is a complicated and even dangerous endeavour. This guide is meant only as a rough reference. It is highly recommended that you entrust a professional auto body shop with the painting of your car. You should not paint your car yourself.

1. Supply Gathering and Workplace Prep

There are many supplies required when painting a vehicle, many of which may not be ones that the average car owner has on hand. Of course, if you are trusting your car painting to a body shop you will not need to worry about any of these. But the general supplies required are:

  • Masking tape
  • 1200 and 2000 grit “wet and dry” sandpaper
  • Paper
  • A spray gun
  • Paint thinner
  • Paint (including primer, acrylic topcoat, and lacquer)
  • Air compressor
  • Face masks and safety glasses

As for your workplace, you will want to have a clean and tidy area to work in that does not have any obvious debris or dust. If you are working outside, you will need to be sure to avoid inclement weather.

2. Evaluate Your Vehicle Condition

Before you begin the process of painting your vehicle, you first need to chart your course. This means examining whether or not your vehicle has rusty spots. If it does, these will need to be treated before you can commence the vehicle paint.

Also, you will need to determine which kind of paint you will be using based on the appearance of your vehicle. This will usually be one of two types:

  1. Solvent-borne (the more traditional option)
  2. Waterborne (the more environmentally-friendly option)

3. Sanding the Vehicle

The sanding of a vehicle is just about as important as the painting itself. Although some car painters prefer to sand their cars down to the bare metal, this is not necessarily required for most paint jobs. However, you will need to ensure that your vehicle is sanded enough so that any of the paint that you apply can properly sit. Be sure to cover any areas that are not being painted with masking tape and paper.

4. Prime Your Vehicle

This step involves the use of paint thinners — so make sure that you are making good use of all of the proper safety equipment. To create your primer, it will be necessary to mix your primer with your paint thinner. You can then begin to prime your vehicle from the roof down. Be prepared to deploy anywhere from 2-3 coats.

5. Apply 3-4 Topcoats

Once your vehicle has been primed, it is time to begin painting. You will want to do this with the same technique that you used for your primer — i.e., from the top down. Be sure that you have ample paint supplies to allow for 3-4 coats of paint, as this is what it will most likely take in order to achieve optimal coverage.

6. Apply lacquer

You may be done with painting, but you’re not done just yet! After you have finished your paint coats, you will need to apply at least one coat of lacquer. Once it is laid, the lacquer will need time to cure.

7. Buff Vehicle

After your lacquer has cured, you can then buff your vehicle to add a finishing touch — just be sure to not linger over one part of the vehicle, as this carries the risk of burning the fresh paint!

Car Paint Scratch Repair in Vancouver

It’s true that scratches, chips, and other auto body imperfections are nearly impossible to avoid. However, with professional paint correction and car paint repair, any damage to your car’s paint job will be virtually invisible. But what is paint correction and how will it optimize your car’s topcoat? Well, car paint correction is the process of removing minor surface damage found in the vehicle’s clear coat. Through a process of leveling out surface imperfections, car paint correction can fix water spots, scratches, paint overspray, oxidation, swirl marks, damage from bird droppings or bug splatters, and more. As such, this method of car paint scratch repair is growing in popularity. It’s an effective alternative to a full repaint to treat reasonable amounts of auto body damage.

This can be a highly time-consuming task to have done right, oftentimes taking between 6 to 12 hours per vehicle. Since the process is tailored to each case, car paint correction involves a multitude of methods and tools to be effective. From specialty polishing machines to various levels of diminishing abrasives, compounding pads, and even sandpaper in some cases, paint correction must be left to the experts. The trick to achieving a perfect car paint repair is working with the curves of the panels, as each shape requires a customized paint correction process. Furthermore, depending on the severity of the damage, the car paint repair will be adjusted to treat the depth of the imperfections. With Super Euro Autobody’s customized paint correction process, your car will leave our shop looking like new. Sleek, shiny, and above all else, free of surface damage. Stop by our facilities to optimize the look of your vehicle with an affordable, quality car paint repair session!

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Painting

How Much Does it Cost to Paint a Car?

No two car paint jobs are alike, so it would make sense that the costs associated with painting a vehicle also come with a serious range. While simple paint jobs can be priced as low as $300, complicated car painting can cost upwards of $3,000!

These costs will also be determined by the quality of supplies that are used in the car painting. They are also determined with the level of care that is put into a car paint job — for example, whether or not a car is being painted to “showroom quality”, an industry term that refers to cars that have been painted as many as 24 times over the process of up to a month!

Do New Cars Need Paint Protection?

If you are in possession of a new car, you may want to do everything in your power to protect the authenticity of your vehicle. Car paint protection is an optional service that does not provide any mechanical update to your vehicle. In fact, it can not even be seen with the naked.

Many new car owners opt for paint protection for their vehicles which comes in the form of spray-on chemicals that are intended to protect vehicles from natural substances that they may encounter in the outdoors. To be fully effective, paint protection needs to be applied more than once. It is not safe to spray your car with paint protection yourself.

With all this being said, if you would like to do everything in your power to protect the integrity of your car for years to come, then yes, paint protection is certainly a wise idea for new cars.

How Can I Remove Paint From a Car?

As we touched on above, removing paint from a vehicle is often the first time in priming it for a paint job. If you are wondering how you can remove paint from a vehicle yourself, here’s how!

To remove paint from a car manually, you will need to have sandpaper as well as a serious amount of elbow grease. A paint scraper can also perform the job efficiently, although it will still take considerable physical effort on your part.

Chemical strips also exist for car paint, though great care has to be taken in their application. Professional body shops will be able to remove car paint quickly with the help of mechanical paint removal tools.

How Can I Match My Car Paint Colour?

Just as it can be difficult to make the colour of a wall in a room, matching the paint colour of a car is no easy task. However, there are some tricks that can make it easier, such as searching for your car’s exact colour by its make, model, and year. It is also possible to search for your car’s colour by using its colour code if you can access this information.

Does Paint Correction Remove Scratches?

Yes and no. While car paint correction is a great alternative to a full repaint, it’s only effective for certain degrees of damage. Most cases of surface damage and minor scratches can be solved with car paint scratch repair; however, paint correction is not meant to solve extensive damage and dents. Assuming your car has sustained a reasonable amount of damage, paint correction executed by trained auto body professionals will restore the look of your topcoat and remove surface scratches.

What Does The Paint Correction Cost?

The cost of car paint correction varies case by case. As each car is evaluated and treated individually, your paint correction cost will depend on the severity of the damage and the degree of labour needed to conduct the car paint repair. For example, minor paint chips will have a lower paint correction cost than deep scratches that penetrate through the clear coat to damage the actual paint. For a customized breakdown of what your car scratch paint will cost, please reach out to our team directly.

How Long Does Paint Correction and Car Scratch Repair Take?

The amount of time paint correction and car scratch repair sessions will take is dependent on several factors. The age of the car, depth of damage, and curve of the panels will all affect how much labour and time is required. Typically, most car paint corrections take between 6 to 12 hours, however, there have been cases where our team has spent over 40 hours on one vehicle. To limit the amount of time your paint correction and car scratch repair takes, regular visits to our auto body shop will remedy minor problems and prevent lengthy – and expensive – repairs.

Is a Paint Correction Worth It?

Car paint correction is absolutely worth it! If you’re looking to restore the look of your auto body without a full repaint, paint correction can do just that. With car paint scratch repair, you can remove surface damage in a less intrusive, more cost-effective way. As long as you have your paint correction conducted by experienced and trained auto body professionals, you’ll be amazed at your vehicle’s transformation.
